Analysis Argentina vs Croatia

Argentina's match against the Netherlands summed up this year's World Cup's chaotic, surprising and unpredictable nature.

La Albiceleste seemed destined for the semifinals when they ended up 2-0 with 15 minutes to play. However, Wout Weghorst had other ideas, and his late goal forced the match into extra time and, eventually, another penalty shootout.

What will remember the game more for the mass brawls, poor play and the 17 yellow cards handed out than for any spectacular football? Still, Argentina was supervised to win, thanks to two excellent saves by Emiliano Martínez.

Lionel Scaloni could make a tactical change if Ángel Di María is fit. He set his team up with a defence of five against the Netherlands but could use a little more attacking power given the way Croatia will play defence.

Full-backs Marcos Acuña and Gonzalo Montiel are suspended. So wait for Nicolás Tagliafico on the left and Nahuel Molina on the right.

Argentina has scored two goals in their last four games. However, he ran into the rear of Croatia, who managed to chain a Brazilian team thrashing without goals.

Honestly, I didn't expect Croatia to still be here at this tournament stage, but they managed to stifle Brazil's creative flair and take the game to penalties, which is their greatest strength.

The defensive possession masterclass of Marcelo Brozovic, Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic in midfield could be just as effective against Argentina. I hope Zlatko Dalić sticks to this successful formula to try and cut through the line-breaking passes Argentina likes to deliver from midfield.

Croatia has gone to extra time in five of their last six World Cup appearances, and I expect this game to go the same way. Argentina doesn't look particularly inspired in the final third, but Lionel Messi's brilliance is never worth overlooking.

This Argentina team is aggressive and not known for their sportsmanship, and they could use this to get under Croatia's skin.

I expect them to win if Argentina can prevent the game from going to penalties. Still, if it comes down to a shootout, Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic will likely be his nation's saviour again.

Chelsea’s new owners serious about midfield rebuild

Chelsea’s midfield is in anguished need of a revamp. At the moment, it is aging and lacks many elements that any midfield of a team who wants to challenge at the very top should have.
