What are Erik ten Hag’s midfield options without Casemiro and Christian Eriksen?

Both players in the midfield swivel that has been at the heart of Manchester United’s appearance this season, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, will be unobtainable to manager Erik ten Hag for the next three sports.

Eriksen was ruled out until late April or early May last week later a terror tackle from Reading’s Andy Carroll led to an important ankle scratch.

Casemiro has added affront to injury by being sent off against Crystal Palace today for holding Will Hughes by the neck during a group altercation.

He will be banned for three matches for savage behavior.

The Brazilian’s forced absence will put paid to any ideas the manager might have had of slowly amalgamating loan signing Marcel Sabitzer into the United side.

“While Sabitzer learns, United must negotiate a compressed series of February fixtures,” The Athletic’s Carl Anka wrote before the Palace match.

“[Casemiro-Fred] is a relationship with archive in the Brazil federal team, but favors solidity over innovation and left United looking flat for much of the first half [against Reading].

“For all of Fred’s advance this summer when coming off the replacement bench, his

grade is best absorbed on limiting the space the antagonism can fancy in midfield.”

However, Anka’s colleague at The Athletic, Mark Critchley, trusts that Casemiro has been a good patron going forward as well.

“[He] is an even great utility when you trust the added and mostly unpredicted bonus United are getting for their take.

“Casemiro was not carried on Old Trafford to score two past a mid-table Championship outfit in the FA Cup fourth round. But his goals against Reading last weekend were his third and fourth of the summer, following two in the Premier League against Chelsea and Bournemouth.

Another player who could be composed into a full-back is Lisandro Martinez, who played 22 times for Ten Hag as a holding midfielder at Ajax. His place in guard could be taken by Luke Shaw, who transcend there during his post-World Cup absence, with Tyrell Malacia coming in at left-back.
