Erik ten Hag’s tactical genius brings Man United victory against Leeds United

Erik ten Hag masterminded an improbable Manchester United win at Elland Road this afternoon later a wound-ravaged side looked to be heading for a stalemate against a brave Yorkshire team buoyed by the combative crowd.

United was without Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Antony, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, and Anthony Martial for the risky stumble over the Pennines.

By the hour mark, Leeds looked the most probable to take the three points.

With Jadon Sancho looking to be the star most probable to turn it around for United and center-onward Wout Weghorst looking lost, Ten Hag’s double change in the 61st minute changed the course of the sport.

Sancho was replaced by juvenile Alejandro Garnacho, who has been disheartening in the last couple of games, while Tyrell Malacia was changed by Lisandro Martinez, pushing Luke Shaw back out to left back. To many fans’ astonishment, Weghorst stayed on.

Garnacho replaced Marcus Rashford on the left pinion, who moved up front. Bruno Fernandes moved to the correct wing and Weghorst was released into the number 10 location.

It seemed like an odd replacement but it was talent.

In the 80th minute, Shaw’s facility to get forward more than Malacia was rewarded with a goal for Marcus Rashford later his England player put in an inch-perfect cross.

Just five minutes after, Weghorst slotted a pretty pass through to Garnacho, who beat his man before striking it past Meslier at the close post.

At the back, Lisandro’s initiation added some much-needed solidity and the defensive dispensation also went up a notch to aid run the clock down.

It was a calculated masterclass from the manager, who constructed  three points from the sport like a sorcerer producing coney out of a hat

The win takes United into second place in the Premier League, although it might be short-lived as adjacent Man City could leapfrog back ahead of them if they get at least a point opposed to Aston Villa this afternoon.
