Lionel Messi led Argentina to an amazing World Cup win, drubbing defending champions France 4-2 on penalties later an enthralling 3-3 draw over 120 minutes.

In a sport that will go down in the archive as one of the huge, France twice came from behind to send the game to penalties. while Messi will take the headlines, Kylian Mbappe was the first player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final Sir Geoff Hurst for England in 1966.

Argentina commanded for the opening 80 minutes and looked to be

steaming to their first World Cup title after 1986. Messi fired his side ahead from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute after Ousmane Dembele was judged to have tripped Angel Di Maria - although it looked like a soft decision.

Juventus winger Di Maria attached Argentina's second later fine casting move - spearheaded by Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister - as France looked to be enduring the reaction of illness in camp during the week.

Messi

the concept he had won it for his side as his bounce strike was given by goal-line machinery in the 108th minute. But, with mere minutes to play, France was awarded another penalty after Gonzalo Montiel was castigated for handball.

Mbappe stepped up a second time and once again beat Emiliano Martinez, hauling France back into the tie for a second time and sending the game to penalties. The 23-year-old gripped

the first kick of the shootout - netting his third of the night- before Messi told. But Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni both missed their spot kicks for France as Argentina scored each of their remaining three, with Montiel firing home the winning penalty to win the 2022 World Cup.

"This squad, these players, play for their people. They play for the Argentina blower," told a spiritual Lionel Scaloni later the sport. "That's what I have always seen. There are no rivalries; everyone pulls in the same direction.

"It is the

atypical dignity to play for your own nation. The players who broke their backs achieved this title because they understood what they had to do on the pitch. We are very, extremely cheery and convex.

"Today, we are World Cup champions. Although we went to a penalty shootout, we deserved the win because of our great performance. Only some

the instant they made distress for us."

When asked about Messi, Scaloni attached: "First of all, we demand to save him a spot for the next World Cup in 2026 if he fancy keeping playing. If he wants to stay playing, he'll be with us.

"He's more than accomplished to establish if he desires to keep playing for Argentina and what he wants to do with his occupation.

"It's a tremendous gratify for us to coach him and his competitor. Everything he transmits to his teammates is unparalleled, which I've never seen before. A teammate, a person who gives so much to his colleague."

How Argentina fell out on top in an all-time extraordinary

France was second best for virtually 80 minutes of the game but will have interrogated the

allocation of Argentina's penalty in the 21st minute. Di Maria dinked simply past Dembele and into the area, with the Frenchman barely grazing his foot before the Juventus striker went grasping to the ground. There was no VAR review of the referee's commitment to award the penalty.

There was tiny indecision about who would take the spot kick. It was lined up and adroitly dispatched by Messi - rifling the ball past Hugo Lloris - as the blue and white shirts handling the stands were sent into transport.

Argentina resume to

influence against a sluggish France, and it was a great goal to make it 2-0. Messi started the move, clicking the ball to Julian Alvarez on the halfway score. He then spotted the run of Brighton's Mac Allister, who heard forward with plenty of space prior to squaring to Di Maria on his port. The striker then made no mistake in inserting home.

Big moments of the game...

36 mins: Di Maria join the second Argentina goal on the counter-rebuke later superb Mac Allister pas

41 mins: Giroud and Dembele took off, replaced by Thuram and Kolo Muani.

117 min: Mbappe sees France level again after Montiel's handball.

Penalties: Montiel scores the winning penalty in the shootout to win the game for Argentina.

That was all Didier Deschamps demanded to see from his verge. Olivier Giroud and Dembele were both recurved in the 41st minute, substituted by Marcus Thuram and Kolo Muani, and were out far more speedy than Argentina for the second half.

Argentina continued to see better chances after the break, with Alvarez and Mac Allister linking up nicely in the future. France finally inscribe their first crack on goal in the 67th minute, with Kolo Muani nodding a corner wide.

But the drama was yet to start as France was handed a lifeline with a penalty in the 79th minute. Kolo Munai was begrimed by Otamendi, who was the imprecise side of his man and brought him down.

As with Argentina's penalty, there was only one man for the career as Mbappe

strided up. Emiliano Martinez - who had not needed to make a rescue in the game until that point - did get a hand to it, but the penalty had too much vigor.

In a repeat of the quarter-final against the Netherlands, Argentina was attached back to 2-2 mere seconds later. It was an impressive end from Mbappe, playing a quick one-two with Kolo Muani before sending a stunning salvo home to absolute France's turnaround.

Messi could have gained it for Argentina in the seventh of eight extra minutes. He hit a diverged attempt goalwards, but a leaping Lloris pushed the ball over the crossbar as the game headed into added time.

Argentina went near to taking the lead during the added session. At the end of the first half, Lautaro Martinez's hit was dramatically blocked by Dayot Upamecano before Montiel's success from scale was nodded over. Lautaro Martinez tried his fortune again soon after, but he shove the ball wide.

Lautaro Martinez has embroiled again as Messi

shoot Argentina back in front in the second half of extra time. The Inter Milan forward forced a sublime save from Lloris, but Messi lurked for the rebound. He shoots goalwards, with Jules Kounde clearing from heavy inside the net. There were a few seconds of tension as the referee consulted his goal-line machinery watch before awarding the goal.

But in a game that epitomized the drama of football, France was awarded a second penalty with four minutes extra time to play. Mbappe left wing from the edge of the area, but a jumping Montiel blocked it with a protracted arm. France forward lined the spot kick up again, dispatching past Emiliano Martinez, as the game went to a penalty shootout.

The show's two stars - Mbappe and Messi - scored the first two penalties. But Martinez contested Coman before Tchouameni sent his endeavor wide. Paulo Dybala and Leandro Parades had scored theirs in both before Kolo Muani also found the mesh for France.

Montiel stepped up to take Argentina's fourth and eventually final penalty to see them win their first World Cup title in 36 years, memorializing Messi in the football narrative.

Player of the match - Kylian Mbappe

It's hard to trust that Mbappe is just 23. He has already been spotlighted at two World Cup finals, and his hat trick on Sunday was the first shrilly in a final in 56 years. Mbappe could not have done more to victory it for his nation but does come away with the tournament's Golden Boot.
